Archbishop Rodi suspends Mass through April 5, 2020.

Pursuant to Archbishop Rodi’s directives, effective immediately, no public Masses, church services, parish or school meetings, activities or classes may be conducted through April 5, 2020. Here at OLG, Fr. Carucci and Fr. Justin will continue to pray the mass in private for your scheduled intentions and for the protection of our nation. The church will be open for private prayer but no worship services will take place.

All: Below is Archbishop Thomas J. Rodi’s full statement regarding steps to be taken in the Archdiocese of Mobile beginning Wednesday. Images of the statement are also below.

Statement from Archbishop Thomas J. Rodi

The Archdiocese of Mobile comprises the Catholic churches and ministries in the southern half of Alabama. We are aware that our world, our nation, and our communities are coping with the covid-19 pandemic. All of us are called to be concerned for our personal welfare and that of our neighbors. This will entail sacrifice. I ask that we pray for our own protection and for those who suffer from ill health. It is also important that we cooperate with civil and health authorities.

Therefore, effective Wednesday, March 18, the following steps are to be taken in the Archdiocese of Mobile. These norms are effective through Sunday, April 5, 2020, but may be extended depending upon future developments.

Catholic Social Services facilities throughout southern Alabama serve approximately 25,000 of our neighbors in need. These services will continue in the following manner:

Emergency Assistance Ministries at our Social Service Centers will remain open providing food for families and individuals, clothing, and help with rent and utility bills. However, applications for this help will be received only by phone. Food and clothing will be distributed at the door and not within the Service Center.

All Thrift Stores will close but clothing will be available for those in need through Emergency Assistance.

Counseling for individuals and families will continue to be available but only by phone.

Parishes may continue to provide food whether from food pantries or kitchens, but only on a takeout basis and not within a building. Other than takeout food, all other parish and school activities and meetings are cancelled.

This includes all worship services. No member of the laity or clergy may conduct a worship service or a devotion of any kind in a church, or other location. I am strongly requesting that our churches remain open for prayer but without services.

Funerals, with or without Mass, will not be celebrated in churches or in any other location. Only graveside services are permitted.

Weddings, only without Mass, may be conducted in a church building but solely with a cleric, bride and groom, two witnesses, and parents of the bride and groom present. No one else may be present.

Confessions may continue but only with a screen separating the priest and penitent or in an arrangement with six feet space between the priest and the penitent.

Baptisms may be celebrated but only with the parents, godparents, and one cleric present.

Holy Water fonts are to be emptied and cleaned.

Although we will not gather for worship, we remain united in Christ. I am confident that our dedicated clergy will continue to serve the spiritual and material needs of neighbor. I particularly request that the clergy be present to the sick and those who suffer difficulties. I ask the people of our Archdiocese to please pray. Even if we cannot receive Holy Communion we can join ourselves with the love of God. Prayer is powerful and I request that we pray even more fervently during these challenging days.

May God bless all of us.

Lent 2020 February 26 – April 12

During Lent, we are asked to devote ourselves to seeking the Lord in prayer and reading Scripture, to service by giving alms, and to practice self-control through fasting. Many know of the tradition of abstaining from meat on Fridays during Lent, but we are also called to practice self-discipline and fast in other ways throughout the season. Contemplate the meaning and origins of the Lenten fasting tradition in this reflection. In addition, the giving of alms is one way to share God’s gifts—not only through the distribution of money, but through the sharing of our time and talents. As St. John Chrysostom reminds us: “Not to enable the poor to share in our goods is to steal from them and deprive them of life. The goods we possess are not ours, but theirs.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2446).

CRH Autumn Season 2019
Open to all baptized Catholics who have been away from the Sacraments.
Catholics Returning Home (CRH) is a time-tested program that helps inactive Catholics reconnect with the Church and get a fresh start. Our Parish is co-sponsoring Autumn sessions starting Thursday September 5th at 7:00 p.m. at Saint Patrick Parish in Robertsdale. The weekly meetings last six weeks, are free, informal and there’s never any pressure to participate further. Our Lord asks each of us to do our part in re-planting the seeds of faith. CRH provides the water. We trust that God provides the growth.
For more information and to pre-register, contact Lynn Rowe at (251) 947-4574 or lynndrowe, OR Deacon Charles at (251) 947-5054.

Update on Fr. Carucci’s Health

Over the last year, many of you have asked how to help Fr. Carucci. Please begin by continuing to pray for him. If you are willing to donate a kidney, YOU CAN HELP EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT A MATCH FOR FATHER. UAB works with three different types of donors: deceased donors, live donors and donor pairs. If you would like more information regarding the living donor and paired donor processes, please visit www.uabmedicine.org/transplant/living-donor-program or call 888-822-7892.

stationscross700.jpgThe Stations of the Cross are a 14-step Catholic devotion that commemorates Jesus Christ’s last day on Earth as a man. The 14 devotions, or stations, focus on specific events of His last day, beginning with His condemnation. The stations are commonly used as a mini pilgrimage as the individual moves from station to station. At each station, the individual recalls and meditates on a specific event from Christ’s last day. Specific prayers are recited, then the individual moves to the next station until all 14 are complete.

The Stations of the Cross are commonly found in churches as a series of 14 small icons or images. They can also appear in church yards arranged along paths. The stations are most commonly prayed during Lent on Wednesdays and Fridays, and especially on Good Friday, the day of the year upon which the events actually occurred.

At OLG, The  Stations of the Cross are prayed on Fridays during Lent at 8:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. (after Fish Fry) and on Good Friday at 3:00 p.m.
